original rugs and wall hangings combining hooking and braiding

Women of Hope
30” x 42”

Hooked and Braided with wool and silk.  Wool and silk dyed by Kris McDermet and Karen Kamenetzky.
Price: $3200.00

The proceeds for the sale of this rug went to the Women’s Freedom Center in Brattleboro, VT.

I saw a photograph of the five women sitting on a bench in the 2009 Film Festival brochure.  It was taken from the film "The Greatest Silence" (The subtitle of the movie is; Rape in the Congo).  I fell in love with the vibrant colors of the five dresses and the facial expressions without ever seeing the front of their faces.

The dresses, headscarves, and small solid colored squares in the border are in silk and the rest is in wool.  The braid is made of silk lined with wool.  My friend Karen works primarily in silk in her wall pieces-see her beautiful work under Links.  We dye wool and silk together and love the way the same dye (Majic Carpet and Prochem) is taken up by both fabrics.
