original rugs and wall hangings combining hooking and braiding

Peaceful & Quiet Offerings

34” x 39”, #4-, 5-, and 6-cut hand-dyed wool on rug warp, hand dyed and as-is wool for braid. Overall design, hooked, and braided by Kris McDermet, Dummerston, Vermont, 2006.

Most of the small hooked designs were taken from the book ‘ The Chinese Brush Painting Studio’ by Pauline Cherrett, published by Barnes and Noble-1997 and the designs were used with permission.  I started this rug in Julie Marie Smith’s class on ‘Hooking Like a Master Painter’.  Stewart suggested a string of lanterns around a koi pond with the birds and bugs of the evenings here in Vermont surrounding the pond.  Thank you to the artists Pauline Cherrett, Joseph Lo, and Sheena Davis for their lovely and delicate designs.  The Chinese characters translate to Peaceful and Quiet Offerings.
