original rugs and wall hangings combining hooking and braiding

Crowns

32” x 42”, #5-, 6-, and 7-cut hand-dyed, and as-is wool on linen for the hooking, proddy flowers on the hats and embellishments of pearls for earrings, hand-dyed and as-is wool for the braid.  Designed, hooked, and braided by Kris McDermet, Dummerston, Vermont, 2006.

I had just read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and had seen an article in the NY Times about a Broadway musical called ‘Crowns’.  I looked at photographs of beautiful and artistic hats to make the hat patterns in the book Crowns:  Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry.  I was making this rug during a class on Imagination with Michelle Micarelli.  Michelle wisely encouraged the use of bright and bold colors.  The theme for the 2006 “Hooked in the Mountains Rug” show at the Shelburne Museum that year was “Strong Women” and I felt that this rug honored these women.  The queen bees are the strong women/bugs of their hives.
